It’s Not Just What You Do — It’s How You Do It: My Current Health Focus
As a Pilates instructor, nutrition coach, and peri-menopausal mum in my 40s with teenage kids, life is....let’s be honest, a bit of a juggle.
Between family life, work, and everything in between, there are always a lot of balls in the air. But one thing I keep coming back to is this: I want to care for my body and my mind in a way that feels supportive but not overwhelming.
No extremes. No burnout. Just small, intentional habits that add up.
So, if you’re a little bit curious (because let’s face it—we all are!), here’s a look at what I’m currently focusing on at home to support my health.
Slowing Down the Way I Eat
This has been a big one for me recently.
After struggling with gut health issues over the years (and still experiencing the occasional flare-up), I’ve realised it’s not just about what I eat but how I eat.
Right now, I’m focusing on:
-
Eating more slowly. Putting my knife and folk down between mouthfuls is really helping with this
-
Chewing my food properly. Digestion starts in the mouth, give it the best chance from the very beginning
-
Sitting upright at the table (instead of rushing or slouching)
It sounds simple, but it’s powerful.
By doing this, I’m supporting my digestion, helping my body process food more efficiently, and becoming more mindful during meals. I’m also getting better at listening to my body—especially those subtle signals that tell me when I’m full.
It’s about creating the right internal environment, not just choosing the “right” foods.
Adding More Strength to My Movement Practice
Pilates will always be my foundation. It’s incredible for strength, mobility, and body awareness.
But as I move through my 40s and navigate hormonal changes, I’m becoming more aware of the importance of progressive strength training.
So lately, I’ve been:
-
Adding more load to my workouts
-
Challenging my muscles in new ways
-
Supporting my bone health and muscle maintenance
Pilates and strength training complement each other beautifully. One builds deep control and awareness, while the other helps future-proof the body. And right now, that balance feels really important.
Getting Outside More
Even if it’s just a short walk.
Getting outside gives me so much in one simple habit:
-
Fresh air
-
Natural light
-
Movement
-
A chance to reset mentally
I’ve been using this time to take mindful walks, practice nose breathing, and sometimes pick up the pace for a more energising power walk. It’s amazing how something so simple can support stress levels, improve sleep, and boost overall wellbeing. Especially when life feels full (which it usually does!).
Creating a Calm Home Environment
Lately, I’ve been filling my home with even more house plants, and I absolutely love it.
They:
-
Make me smile
-
Bring a sense of calm into the space
-
Give me a small, mindful ritual when I water and care for them
-
Our environment plays such a big role in how we feel day to day. Creating a calm, welcoming space at home is one of those underrated but powerful tools for supporting a healthy lifestyle.
A Gentle Reminder
Health doesn’t have to mean doing more. Sometimes it’s about doing things differently and more mindfully.
These are the small things I’m focusing on right now. Nothing extreme. Just supportive habits that help me feel a little more balanced in a busy season of life.
