Starting Pilates...What's your WHY?

​

I have been reflecting a lot recently as I work towards a new project and thinking back to when and WHY I joined a pilates class, what was my PUSH to make the leap and decide to make a change (and something as simple as joining a class did feel like a big leap at the time, I’m sure lots of you can resonate!)…. I was suffering with gut issues that were being triggered by stress! Yes that’s right gut issues and stress, not what you would particularly associate with pilates right? Did it work? It CHANGED my LIFE!

 

Yes, pilates got me moving again and I loved the feeling it gave me, but mostly, at the time when my kids were young and I felt bogged down with life it gave me an hour to myself to just focus on me, my mind and my body! The enjoyment of that class and my ‘me’ time had a positive impact on my wellbeing outside of the class and I took that and started putting together the other pieces of the puzzle to help solve my problem. I got physically stronger, mentally stronger, I pushed myself out my comfort zone and grow in confidence. I got a handle on my stress and my gut issues by using my new found energy and enjoyment from Pilates to start making changes to other areas of my health. Was it easy? No…Did it take a long time? Yes (and it’s still a working progress) Did I have set backs? Yes…Has it been worth it? YES!!!

 

I truly believe that for many of us Pilates is not just a type of movement or exercise program but the start of a journey to discovering and learning more about our body and treating our mind and body as a whole… Where one chapter of the story starts to unfold on to the next until you realise that there are many chapters that make up the whole story! (Read through my list of blogs to give you ideas about other wellbeing chapters that can help you write your own story)

 

What’s your why? Maybe you have suffered with long term back pain and want to learn how to manage it so you can enjoy daily tasks without constant aches and pain…Yes pilates can be one of the chapters to help you on this journey….Maybe you have recently been diagnosed with a health condition or are at high risk of developing a condition and your doctors advise was lacking but you know you need to start taking action to improve health and lifestyle….Yes pilates can be one of the chapters that can help you with this…Have you read an article on how we all lose muscle mass as we age and you know you don’t do any strength work but you want to be in the best health possible so you continue to enjoy life with friends and family as you get older…. Yes Pilates can be one of your chapters that can help with this…

 

We all know deep down that we need to move more, eat better, sleep better, manage stress levels but what’s your PUSH to start? What’s your WHY? What needs to happen before you decide to make that change?
