The Fifth Pillar of Health: The Power of Community…

We all know the obvious when it comes to looking after our health (even if we don't always want to listen or act on it): move more, eat well, manage stress and get good sleep. These are the four key pillars of health in today's world.

But let’s not forget the little guys that stand alongside them adding even more value….One of those being Community.

Social connection plays a huge role in our wellbeing. Feeling part of something, sharing experiences and building relationships can have a powerful impact on both our mental and physical health.

When I look back at the different stages of my life, I realise I've always naturally gravitated towards community. I spent three years volunteering as Chair of the Preschool Committee (I only went along to one meeting to find out what it was all about, and somehow, three months later, I'd been persuaded to become Chair!). I've also volunteered on the fundraising committee for our local football club, helping organise and market events, as well as working with young people on health and wellbeing and mentoring other students through their pilates qualifications. Looking back, those experiences gave me so much more than I ever expected.

Now, more than six years into running my Pilates business, I have the privilege of watching new communities form right in front of me.

People often arrive at their first class knowing no one. Some are nervous about what to expect. Others tell me they've spent months or even years building up the courage to walk through the door.

Then something lovely happens.

Before long, they're chatting to the person on the mat next to them, sharing stories, laughing together and encouraging one another. Friendships begin to grow. Even my one-to-one clients often become much more than clients. What starts as a teacher–client relationship often develops into genuine friendship.

There's something incredibly rewarding about seeing people connect.

Stepping outside our comfort zone, meeting new people and becoming part of something bigger helps us grow. It gives us confidence, a sense of belonging and purpose. And that wonderful feel-good factor doesn't just lift our mood, it benefits our overall health too.

So, if you've been feeling a little isolated lately, or you've been putting off trying something new, perhaps this is your sign.

Join a class. Volunteer for a local project. Take up a new hobby. Or simply reach out to someone you haven't spoken to in a while and ask how they are.

You never know where one conversation, one class or one small step might lead.

Sometimes, the greatest benefit isn't just the exercise or the activity itself, it’s finding your community.
